FAQs

  • Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves. Originating from Japan, matcha has been a central part of Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries, valued for both its unique flavor and numerous health benefits.

Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped in water and then discarded, matcha involves consuming the entire leaf. This means that when you drink matcha, you're ingesting a higher concentration of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals than you would from other types of tea.

Matcha is known for its vibrant green color, which is the result of the tea plants being grown in the shade for several weeks before harvest. This process increases the chlorophyll content, giving matcha its characteristic hue and a rich, grassy flavor with a hint of sweetness.

The preparation of matcha also differs from other teas. Instead of steeping, matcha is whisked with hot water to create a smooth, frothy beverage. It can be enjoyed on its own, as a traditional tea, or mixed into lattes, smoothies, and even baked goods.

In addition to its taste, matcha is prized for its health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which are believed to have cancer-fighting properties. Matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and helps to counterbalance the stimulating effects of caffeine, providing a calm, focused energy.

Overall, matcha is more than just a tea; it’s a superfood that supports overall well-being while offering a unique and enjoyable flavor experience.

  • Making matcha is a simple yet rewarding process that turns a few basic steps into a moment of mindful indulgence. We recommend using our Ivy Wellness Club Bamboo whisk as the benefits of matcha are retained in the whisking process as opposed to using a metal whisk which has been proven to interact with the powder in a way that neutralises the potent antioxidant benefits of matcha. Whichever way, here’s how to create a smooth, frothy cup of matcha that’s as delicious as it is nourishing:

    What You’ll Need:

    - Ceremonial grade matcha (about 1-2 teaspoons- you receive a free bamboo spoon with every purchase of our matcha tins)

    - Matcha bowl (or any wide, shallow bowl)

    - Bamboo whisk (chasen) or metal whisk

    - Bamboo scoop (chashaku) or a regular teaspoon (free with every matcha tin purchase)

    - Fine mesh sifter (optional)

    - Hot water (around 70-80°C or 160-175°F)

    - Optional: Your favorite milk for a matcha latte (we love a creamy Oat milk blend or Almond milk for the calorie/ health conscious)

    - Optional: Maple syrup, vanilla essence, or vanilla sweetener syrup (like Monin or Netter with the latter available on takealot)

    Step-by-Step Instructions:

    1. Sift the Matcha:

Begin by sifting 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder into your matcha bowl. Sifting helps to remove any clumps, ensuring a smooth and lump-free tea. This step is key to achieving that perfect froth.

    2. Add Hot Water:

Heat your water to around 70-80°C (160-175°F). If you don’t have a thermometer, let boiling water cool for a minute or two before using. Pour about 2-3 ounces (60-90 ml) of the hot water into the bowl with the sifted matcha.

    3. Whisk to Perfection:

Using your bamboo whisk, start whisking the matcha in a “W” or “M” motion. Whisk briskly until the matcha is fully dissolved and a fine layer of foam forms on the surface. This usually takes about 15-30 seconds. The faster and more consistent your motion, the frothier your matcha will be.

    4. Optional: Sweeten to Your Taste:

If you enjoy a hint of sweetness, consider adding a dash of maple syrup, a few drops of vanilla essence, or a splash of vanilla sweetener syrup. These additions can enhance the natural flavors of the matcha without overpowering its delicate taste. Simply stir your chosen sweetener into the matcha after whisking.

    5. Optional: Create a Matcha Latte:

If you prefer a creamier drink, heat and froth your favorite milk separately. Once your matcha is whisked, pour in the frothed milk and stir gently. Sweeteners like vanilla syrup pair exceptionally well with a matcha latte, adding a rich, comforting flavor.

    6. Enjoy:

Your matcha is now ready to be savored! Take a moment to appreciate the vibrant green color and the earthy aroma before you take your first sip. Drink it slowly, enjoying the rich flavors and the calming, invigorating effects.

Tips for the Best Matcha Experience:

    - Use high-quality ceremonial grade matcha for the best flavor and health benefits.

    - Whisk vigorously to create a smooth, frothy texture.

    - Experiment with water-to-matcha ratios to find your perfect strength and taste.

    - Play with sweeteners to discover your ideal balance of matcha’s earthy notes with the sweetness of maple or vanilla.

With a little practice, you’ll master the art of matcha preparation, making each cup a delicious and invigorating part of your daily routine.
